The snow has melted, the sun is shinning and the road construction season has begun! Road repair crews are out in full force but it seems like they never repair the roads you are travelling.Â
So while you wait for your roads to be repaired, let us pass on some tips to help protect your vehicle from the damage of pothole encounters.Â
Big or small - potholes cause damage: When your vehicle repeatedly drives into smaller potholes, the damage may not be visible, but the safety of your car may be compromised. Tire damage, bent rims, alignment problems, worn steering and suspension parts are common repairs that result from potholes.
If you hit a really big pothole, you may be able to claim on your car's accident insurance policy to help pay for the damage.
Slow Down: The faster you drive through potholes the greater the damage and expense.
Hold the Steering Wheel Firmly: As you bump on down the road, your car may lurch out of a pothole and veer into another vehicle or go off the road. So hold on tightly.Â
Check your Tire Pressure: Proper air pressure in your tires gives your vehicle better traction and provides the best cushion between the wheel and the bumpy roads.
Don't Apply The Brakes Directly Over A Pothole: Apply the brakes before your tires make contact with the dreaded pothole. If you brake during impact with the hole, the car's weight will be shifted to the front of the wheels and could increase any damage.
In reality, your best defense against potholes is to avoid them. If your car does have suspension or alignment problems, caused by potholes, don't put off the repair work. Driving around with bad suspension is a safety issue and is even more dangerous when trying to drive around potholes.

Thank you Monique, It's nearly time to start thinking about winter tires. Funny how the fall creeps up on us when we least expect it to!

Wow, interesting. I knew weather had an effect on our roads, but I never took time to think of what those implications would be on my vehicle! Thanks for a great read!
